As we grow older, our eyes become more susceptible to a number of age-related eye conditions and vision problems. At the office of Shannon Chandler, O.D., our professional Las Vegas eye doctors are available to properly diagnose and treat vision problems that might arise as you naturally move through the aging process.
One of the most common vision conditions that older patients experience is macular degeneration. The macula is responsible for central vision, also referred to as your “detail vision”. Since macular degeneration occurs most often in older patients, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the most common type of this disease. There are two distinct types of ARMD – “wet” ARMD and “dry” ARMD.
Wet ARMD is less common, but its progression is more aggressive than dry ARMD, and thereby poses a more immediate risk to one’s vision. Dry ARMD is the more common type of ARMD; however, since it develops so gradually, it can be difficult for patients to notice the problem until serious damage has already occurred in their vision. It is for this reason that regularly scheduled eye exams are so important. During a comprehensive eye exam with our Las Vegas eye doctors, signs of macular degeneration can be diagnosed and treated promptly, in addition to other conditions and vision problems.
