Retinal exam in Las Vegas

The office of Shannon Chandler, O.D. and Lesa Davis, O.D. specializes in state of the art eye care, comprehensive eye exams, and contact lens fittings in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere designed to make you feel at home. A retinal exam in Las Vegas office is designed to diagnose eye conditions that can’t be discovered during a regular eye examination; this allows us to immediately diagnose your condition before any symptoms get worse.

Our digital retinal photograph, called EyeScreen, uses the latest in digital technology to create a high-resolution photograph of your retina. The usual side effects that accompany dilation drops – such as light sensitivity and blurred vision – are non-existent with this procedure. The highly detailed picture allows us to compare, and review your retina during future visits, to determine changes to the retina, if any. The EyeScreen documents the retina, aids in screening for any eye diseases, and allows for monitoring the health of the eye. Although slit lamp tests or ophthalmoscopes can check for eye diseases, the EyeScreen allows us to view the retina at a much higher resolution. EyeScreen can help check your eyes for conditions such as glaucoma, retinal holes, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection of these conditions is crucial – they can cause, or result in blindness and vision loss. Signs of diabetes and high blood pressure are often detected during the retinal exam, well before actual symptoms are experienced by the patient.

Those afflicted with diabetes should have their eyes checked frequently, primarily due to the danger of vision loss. Macular degeneration is especially prominent in diabetics, so having a doctor that is familiar with this type of disease can be essential. Schedule your retinal exam in Las Vegas office if you have experienced any eye or vision changes, so that we may check your eyes immediately and detect any problems before they start.

Keratoconic Contact Lens Fittings in Las Vegas

Are you currently suffering from the ocular condition known as keratoconus? Keratoconus is unlike any other vision problem; it is a unique degenerative disorder which causes structural changes to the cornea of the eye.  The cornea begins to thin due to weakening of the collagen fibers in the corneal tissue.  As the collagen fibers continue to lose their strength, the cornea bulges outward into the shape of a cone.  As the cone shape progresses, corneal scarring can occur which may result in the need for a corneal transplant.

Symptoms of keratoconus include distortion of the vision, seeing multiple images, and sensitivity to lights or glare.  While there is no known cause for keratoconus, there are some genetic and environmental factors that can trigger its onset.  Studies have also shown that excessive eye rubbing can cause progression of the disease.
For patients with early keratoconus, glasses and soft contact lenses can be used to correct vision.  As the condition progresses, it is necessary to correct the vision with a rigid, gas-permeable lens, also known as an RGP lens. An RGP lens is not always as comfortable a fit as a soft lens.  To alleviate this, hybrid lenses have been developed that allow for the best of both worlds.  Hybrid lenses have an RGP center with a soft outer lens ‘skirt’ to provide better comfort and visual clarity. Dr. Chandler can determine if this type of contact lens is right for you at your next contact lens fitting.
The progression of keratoconus differs from patient to patient and needs to be continuously monitored.  During a keratoconic contact lens fitting, Dr. Chandler evaluates the health of the cornea, strength of vision, and the fit of the contact lenses.   Problems such as dry eyes, allergies, and your environment can all present challenges when wearing contact lenses.  The needs of each patient are carefully considered during all contact lens fitting appointments with Shannon Chandler, O.D.   She is dedicated to finding the best option to provide you with healthy, comfortable and clear vision.
