Las Vegas Pediatric Eye Exams

Comprehensive pediatric eye exams are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems, conditions and diseases; early detection is especially vital in children. Early detection allows for treatment to begin before a child experiences the challenges associated with poor vision, or before any permanent damage to vision has occurred. The Las Vegas optometry office of Shannon Chandler, O.D., strives to provide the highest quality of pediatric eye care, ensuring that your child achieve optimal vision and eye health, thereby minimizing or preventing vision problems that could affect their school work or other everyday activities. We focus on kid-friendly eye exams for children 5 years of age and older. If your child is younger than 5 years of age and experiencing eye problems, we can provide you with a referral to the appropriate specialist.

Eye examinations for children are especially important, as 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers – and 25 percent of school-aged children – experience problems with vision. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that infants have the first eye exam at 6 months of age. Children should be re-examined at age 3, then again just before they begin school. Scheduling a child’s pediatric eye exam at the office of Dr. Chandler can be very beneficial, as many basic skills require good eyesight, such as near and distance vision, binocular (two eyes) coordination, peripheral awareness, and hand-eye coordination – all essential in a child’s learning process. Comprehensive pediatric eye exams also test visual acuity, eye tracking and focusing skills, and can detect problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, amblyopia, crossed eyes, and color blindness. Dr. Chandler suggests that all children have their vision evaluated annually; this is recommended for those who wear vision correction in addition to those who may not. Our team of caring eye doctors will also check for eye diseases during the child’s eye exam, and evaluate the eyes as an indicator of the overall health of the child. The office of Shannon Chandler, O.D. also offers state of the art diagnostic equipment, such as digital retinal photography.

At the Las Vegas optometry office of Shannon Chandler, O.D., our mission is to preserve, restore, and enhance the vision of our patients of all ages. Dr. Chandler provides particular care in the treatment of pediatric patients – establishing good eye health early can aid in avoiding complications with the eyes and overall ocular health in the future. Please call our office today if you have any questions regarding pediatric eye exams, or would like to schedule an appointment.

Here at the office of Dr. Shannon Chandler, we are proud to provide high quality eye care service to patients of all ages, including pediatric patients. In fact, the Las Vegas pediatric eye exams is one of the most important services that Dr. Shannon Chandler offers in our Las Vegas office. It is imperative that children have their eyes examined at least once a year. Dr. Chandler recommends that children receive their eye exams just before the start of the new school year, or shortly after the school year begins. Following this schedule ensures that any visual impairments or diseases can be detected well before they become academic and/or behavioral challenges in school. If a child is displaying signs or symptoms of a potential problem with vision or eyes, such as difficulty seeing the board, frequent headaches, squinting or rubbing of the eyes, or bumping into furniture or other objects, a pediatric eye exam should be strongly considered. Some common eye issues that are detected by our pediatric eye exams include refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as eye conditions common in childhood like amblyopia (reduced vision is one eye) and strabismus (an eye turn). During the exam, a series of in-depth testing techniques are performed to most effectively evaluate a child’s eye health and quality of vision. At the conclusion of the visit, the results are discussed with the patient and parents, along with any additional recommendations for treatment.

Las Vegas Annual Eye Exam

Vision Testing in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Annual Eye Exam

Las Vegas Annual Eye Exam

An annual eye exam is always a good idea – regularly scheduled exams are necessary not just to ensure good vision, but also to diagnose potential issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, and diabetic retinopathy, which occurs in those with diabetes. If not detected early and treated properly, diabetic retinopathy can cause permanent damage to the vision. If you find yourself in need of an appointment, schedule a visit with Shannon Chandler, O.D. to receive professional and comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and referrals in the Las Vegas area.

Preparing for an annual eye exam is easy. Simply assess or determine any issues you are experiencing with your vision; you will also need to bring along your current glasses or contact lenses, if applicable. Include a pair of sunglasses, in the event that pupils are dilated during the visit –the dilation causes the eyes to be more sensitive to light. (Retinal imaging can be performed as an alternative to dilation; in this case, a digital photograph is taken of the eye, and there are no side effects with this method.)

A variety of procedures are conducted during an eye exam with Dr. Chandler. A visual acuity test will be performed to determine how well you see at far and close distances, with and without correction. The test contains letters that decrease in size as you read down the chart. During this test, each eye is covered, one at a time, and you will be asked to read the as many letters as possible. The refraction procedure will determine the best possible prescription for your eyes. There are also some different tests – accommodation and convergence tests – that determine the eyes’ ability to maintain focus at close distances. The exam will continue with an extra ocular muscle movement test, which checks to ensure that the muscles are working properly, and that the eyes track targets normally in various directions. A cover test will be administered to see how the eyes align when focusing on objects both up close and farther away. Pupillary reactions will be tested to see how the pupils react to both light, and objects, at close distances. A slit lamp exam allows Dr. Chandler to look, in great detail, at the external and internal anatomy of the eye with a microscope. Intraocular eye pressure will be measured to determine if there is a risk for glaucoma. Visual field testing will be completed to ensure that peripheral vision is clear of any defects. This test also helps to detect changes from glaucoma, neurological conditions and retinal conditions, among other things. Additional and/or alternative specialized tests may be administered during the comprehensive eye exam, based on individual needs, health, and family history of any eye conditions.

For the best in quality vision care, make an appointment to have your eyes examined today with Dr. Shannon Chandler.

Treatments for Astigmatism in Las Vegas

Premium vision care in Las Vegas begins with a comprehensive eye examination at the office of Shannon Chandler, O.D. Regular eye exams are the best means of detecting any changes in vision, diseases of the eye, or other disorders which may not present any obvious or painful symptoms. Astigmatism is a condition which is defined as an unusual curvature of the eye. As an example, if a perfectly normal eye were the shape of a marble, an eye with astigmatism would be less perfectly spherical, and a bit more oblong, like a football (though the degree of curvature can be broad). This variation in the eye’s curvature causes light to be refracted more in one direction than the other, resulting in objects at any distance appearing distorted or blurry.

After detection, astigmatism can be corrected using prescription eyeglasses, soft toric contact lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, and/or hybrid contact lenses (soft and RGP lenses). As a general guide, prescription eyeglasses may be necessary to correct your eyesight at a particular or various distances. Contact lenses are precisely fitted to the eye to fit comfortably, and to accurately increase the eye’s ability to see well.

Recommendations for astigmatism treatment in Las Vegas will be made for you by Shannon Chandler, O.D. Each patient’s needs are understandably unique – upon completion of your eye exam, Dr. Chandler will be sure to review all of her findings with you. Children are at a very crucial age in their development, both academically and physically. The most common optical conditions develop in a person’s younger years, as many of the conditions we have are genetically passed down. This means that your children need to be seen every year for an eye exam from your trusted Las Vegas children’s eye care center to ensure their eyes are functioning perfectly. In most cases, children are diagnosed with a simple case of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism that can be easily corrected with prescription eyeglasses. These conditions develop at a slow and gradual rate such that your children may not even realize they are having trouble seeing clearly until a classmate or teacher points it out to them.

If your child has already been diagnosed with a vision condition, your son or daughter needs to be seen for an eye exam every single year to ensure that their eyeglass prescription is up to date. Prescriptions often change every year as your children’s eyes develop along with the rest of their bodies. Sometimes their vision can get better and often times can grow worse until it plateaus. This means that the eyeglasses your children received last year may not be the right prescription anymore. When it comes to your child’s vision, be sure to put his or her optical care in the hands of our Las Vegas children’s eye care professionals at the office of Shannon Chandler, O.D.

Our esteemed team of Las Vegas children’s eye care providers at the optometry office of Shannon Chandler, O.D., specialize in pediatric eye exams to make sure learning is easy on eyes this school year.
